I just discovered that after "offering" me a temporary "account upgrade free trial", Dropbox had done a full remote upload of an external USB hard drive connected to my Mac. One TB of confidential data left my local storage without my informed consent!
I only discovered it when my "free trial" ended and I reverted to my usual subscription, and Dropbox complained about being full. It took an hour to understand what had happened, and then delete the remote copy tediously, because you can't batch select to empty the trash. That this might even happen is a scandal. My wife may not have refused something at the right time, I don't know, but that is not an excuse: setting up that sort of backup should only be the result of deliberate action, not a default choice.
The "backup" tab in the Dropbox app preferences is set up in a way that nudges you to accept the backup default set. I have no clue of how an external drive ended up being hoovered in the cloud, since it doesn't seem to be part of a default set.
