Bootleg records have traditionally been sold to earn a profit for those who manufacture them and to fill voids in the marketplace by providing recorded material by popular artists that is not available through legitimate, licensed recordings. While the manufacture of bootleg recordings is illegal in most Western countries, copyright laws in the s and s were less strict than they are today, and at one time, bootleg records were so common as to be found in the bins in chain record stores and major department stores.
Occasionally, bootleg records have compiled rare or otherwise hard to find legitimately released material, though such compilation albums comprise a small percentage of the bootleg market. Historically, most bootleg records have been live recordings, as those are the easiest type of unreleased material to obtain.
Bootleg records have been around since at least the s; there are numerous 78 RPM records in existence that are unauthorized. The first of the modern bootleg records was a two record set of previously unreleased music by Bob Dylan. The album was originally released without a title and issued in a plain white cover. Sales figures are unknown, but the album is believed to have sold upwards of ten thousand copies. Of course, with copyright laws not applying to such releases, Great White Wonder soon became copied by other bootleg manufacturers, and the album has since appeared in a multitude of configurations, on black vinyl and colored vinyl, and with and without properly printed covers.
Shortly thereafter, an album by the Beatles called Kum Back appeared in stores, containing material from the then-unreleased Let It Be recording sessions. At this time, numerous FM radio stations around the country began playing both Kum Back and Great White Wonder on the air, and this helped sales tremendously. It may seem odd today, but at the time, these three titles and a few others that popped up shortly thereafter were often available in mainstream record stores.
We know a collector who bought his copy of Kum Back at a Sears store in Texas when the album was first released. Over the next few years, hundreds, if not thousands, of bootleg records appeared on the market from a variety of manufacturers. In the earliest days of bootleg records, most releases had plain covers and plain labels. This was due to the fact that record companies who were pressing these albums were reluctant to put printed labels on the discs, due to their dubious legality.
While packaging of bootleg records was initially minimalist, with plain white covers and blank labels, competition quickly emerged in the industry and that led to better quality, if still untraditional, packaging. A recent reddit post has highlighted an email conversation between a fan and Danny, where Danny replies telling the fan that the band is currently remastering all of their albums for release on vinyl.
This is huge news for a number of reasons if it holds true. Firstly, 10, days has never had an official vinyl […]. Stay in your lane and just do your thing and let Tool do theirs. MJK, well I feel that having joined the tool army and still not received my kit sucks, im complaining because I paid for the membership and 46 and two dollars for a shipping fee plus redeem bundle 6. I hope all of u tool army crybabys DONT renew ur membership so I dont have to hear about it when I click on the 'album' link lmao-I mean seriously?!
I mean all this cry baby bs over a shirt, patch and a fucking keychain?! Once upon a time, there was a ToolArmy message board. Now we have a "comment on this album" section. Yeah whatever happened to this place. I'm one of those grandfathered in to a lifetime membership. I hope they at least try to work on the resale issue and do some fan presales again. I was staking out ticketmaster and it took me an hour to get a nosebleed seat in a city that was 2 away from the closest to me and ended up unable to go because I couldn't get enough time off work to travel there.
Hope you're listening guys. I finally recienved my fear inoculum cd from Alex Grey signed by Alex haven't received my toolarmy kkit though, sad but true. When I ordered it said they would be shipping at the end of September but I haven't received any notifications yet.
Not yet Wondering if I'll ever see it I wonder why they left out the segues. They're obviously an important part of the album. It plays exactly the same played in reverse. And the segues in general tie the album nicely together, I feel. Perfect timing. Love it! Where is tool membership page and how do you sign out? Been 3 weeks since I joined til army and still no free stuff How long does it take. I recently joined too and didn't hear a word until one day I received an email about my swag.
Yeah same here I tried joining In May paid money through this site. We reapplied in June. You get a random email after joining, try going back and searching through your email that's what I had to do. Descending could go down as TOOLs greatest song! I guess 7empest could too and Pneuma! Damn this album is a masterpiece! That's what I've been saying. Shattered all of my expectations, picked the pieces up, glued them back together, and then shattered them again.
But would love to know where I can get my hands on a CD? Got blown all the way to this site and finally subscribed I paid the money purely for presales to the live show when they inevitably bring the tour to NZ Thanks for everything Tool :P Love you all! Including whoever is reading this right nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnow!
That is outrageous. We waited a lifetime for Tool to release this album only for them to release a very small amount. And the people that managed to get their hands on the album put them up for sale probably don't know or care about Tool. They are just in it for the money. But it is almost impossible for the band to screen people as to who is sincere and who's not.
It would be a form of discrimination IF they did the screening. I wanted the album in a CD format because I could't think of better way to hear ANY album then driving in you're car with undivided attention solely on the music. Now I have to wait to see if the band decides to release more CD's or if there going to have to think of a creative way to put out the CD. There is just no way around it. We waited a long time for this album maybe I have no life but it angers me down to the core because its almost as though you can't get you're hands on it.
RUSH has existed as long as I have been alive and no longer will be making music together. I saw them 7 times That is disheartening to me. They were a VERY special band. Tool is a very special band too and when a band makes high-quality music you never want the band to end. I just wish they had put out another album. We are on borrowed time with Tool. After they disband there will be nothing left Location: France. Zongadude , Aug 19, Location: London, England.
I have the original vinyl. Location: Sacramento, Ca. I have the first pressing without the BMG. It sounds better than the CD. I might have to sell it this year though. I should get the full amount for it before they reissue it. I have the original test pressing not the one.
I still haven't opened it. I really really want to but at the same time I don't want to. Then again, I'll never ever sell it so why shouldn't I? Dzongkha likes this. Location: ottawa. Location: Atlanta.
