The SGS Grant is intended to be a grant-in-aid of research; students should not expect the grants to cover the full cost of travel or field work. It is not intended to fund the research itself, but the travel to do the research. Grants are awarded on a competitive basis for projects that have clearly defined objectives and methods, and that meet the criteria established.
Departments submitting more than one application must provide a nomination letter with rankings and commentary for all the applicants. Awards are for a minimum period of four weeks, and a maximum period of six months. Note that the award is not intended to cover the full cost of travel or field research, and the number of awards given in each competition will vary, and are subject to the discretion of the School of Graduate Studies.
Funding will not be provided for research equipment, computer hardware and most software, office supplies, communication costs, medical, toiletry or other personal items. A literature review comprised of an independent study reviewing a body of published literature and critically summarizing the findings. A description of relevant publication s authored by the student during the course and their contribution to the thesis research.
The comprehensive evaluation will require students to integrate the major theoretical writings and pertinent substantive research with their selected research focus.
Students will demonstrate an in-depth and broad understanding of the current scholarly literature and methodological approaches in their relevant field of study in global health. All students will produce an original piece of empirical research, situated in relevant scholarly literature, which will become the reference point for conceptualizing and justifying a central research question and interpreting the significance of the principal findings.
Prior to the program start date, students should have an idea for a research topic that aligns with existing faculty for supervision. This information should be submitted as part of the online application and in the Statement of Interest.
The principal supervisor will be a full-time faculty member who has approved privileges for supervising doctoral students in this transdisciplinary program. The composition of the supervisory committee will be made during the course of the first year of studies.
